A group of 100 U.S. brand owners and other stakeholders have laid out a roadmap for achieving various plastics sustainability objectives.
The U.S. Plastics Pact consists of over 100 of the leading consumer products brands, CPG and food products packaging companies, and retailers in the US.
Formed in 2020 by The Recycling Partnership and the World Wildlife Fund, launched as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact, the network connects diverse public-private stakeholders across the plastics value chain to rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastics, to create a path forward to realize a circular economy for plastic in the United States.
The pact has laid out its first five-year plan, Roadmap to 2025, for increasing recycled plastic use and boosting recycling rates
The pact identifies the steps and target delivery dates to achieve the goals of:
- to define a list of problematic or unnecessary packaging and ultimately eliminate those products
- to make 100% of plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable
- to recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging
- to use an average of 30% recycled content or bio-based content in plastic packaging.
At a high level, the members agree to:
- use an average of 30% recycled or bio-based content by 2025
- recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging by 2025
- define and eliminate problematic/unnecessary packaging
- make 100% of plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable
Many other plastics producers and users have signed on in principle to the stated goals of the pact.
